Work packages

WP1: Project Management – This WP has the responsibility to coordinate partner efforts and manage the entire project, at financial, administrative, contractual and technical level (Leader: TEK).

The objectives of WP1 related to the managing and coordination activities of the project are to:

  • Ensure that the project is given a management level suitable to European Defence Agency (EDA) standards;
  • Initiate the project phases (including contract signature) and complete all the necessary administrative tasks required by the EDA (collect cost statements or financial audits from all parties and submit them to the EDA);
  • Prepare and maintain the project planning and monitor partner resources and progress, to avoid delays and overspending;
  • Give project Partners enough awareness, support, feedback, knowledge and capabilities to ensure the success of the project;
  • Coordinate the Consortium to assure coherent actions;
  • Provide an effective linkage between the project and the EDA and other interested parties.

WP2: System Specification – This WP is responsible for analysing and identifying realistic use cases and scenarios for SPIDER utilization and, taken it into account, specifying the system requirements for each subsystem of the SPIDER concept. (Leader: TEK).

The key objective of this work package is to study and specify the requirements of the targeted users. Based on this analysis, it will define and deliver two representative use cases. The objectives of WP2 will be achieved by addressing the following:

  • To define the two use-cases;
  • To analyse the usage scenarios of the SPIDER platform aiming at a representative, yet extensible, set of deployment domains with a deployment specific set of platform services and components;
  • To define the System Requirements; and
  • To define architecture of the SPIDER system.

WP3: Indoor Mapping – Research and development of indoor mapping, both using the indoor mobile sensors and the outdoors sensor network (Leader: ARL).

The objectives of WP3 are the following:

  • Develop solutions to map a building’s internal structure using two different approaches:
    • Using Radio Frequency radars onboard aerial drones outdoors to estimate the building’s internal structure.
    • Use LR1 SLAM to map a building’s internal structure.
  • Perform tests in a controlled environment to validate the feasibility of the concept.
  • Investigate the most appropriate frequencies, signals and algorithms to map a building’s internal structure.
  • A prototype to demonstrate the proof of concept will be built.

WP4: Human Detection – This WP will focus on the detection of humans inside the building, both using the indoor mobile sensors and the outdoors sensor network (Leader: IT).

The objectives of WP4 are the following:

  • Develop solutions to detect moving bodies inside a building using two different approaches:
    • Using an array of sensors that use Radio Frequency signals to sense any change in the propagation channel (through or reflection) of the signals in a building with people inside.
    • Use LR1 Visual sensor to detect people inside a building.
  • Perform tests in a controlled environment to validate the feasibility of the concept.
  • Develop detection strategies that use the most appropriate frequencies, signals and algorithms to detect the presence of humans inside buildings.
  • A prototype to demonstrate the proof of concept will be built.

WP5: Data Fusion – This WP will focus on methods for extracting information from the different combinations of available sensors, as well as on evaluating the robustness of the methods considered in the presence of sensors failure (Leader: TEK).

The objectives of WP5 are the following:

  • Assess the user requirements for SPIDER’s sensor outcome results;
  • Develop strategies to process raw data retrieved from sensors;
  • Test distinct data fusion techniques and strategies for both indoor mapping and human detection tasks in a laboratory environment;
  • Analyse the feasibility of a real-time solution implementation on-field as well as inclusion of robustness methods;

WP6: Valorisation – This WP handles the communication of the project activities during its execution and for planning the dissemination and exploitation strategy of the project results (Leader: BDI).

The objective of this work package is to maximize the outcomes of the SPIDER project through effective outreach activities. This involves development of the Exploitation Strategy and Dissemination Plan, coordinating the contributions to publications, conducting workshop, and supporting the public website. In addition to this more generalized dissemination, a workshop including a small demonstration will be planned and conducted to promote the SPIDER project concepts and outcomes among a wide scope of defence and security organizations.
